The Importance of Patience

Wherever I go in the world, I seek out being in nature as it empowers my personal growth.  I choose, whenever possible, to exercise outdoors, as it combines my love of fitness with inspiring surroundings.

During a routine run around my local lake this past weekend, instead of bringing my headphones like I usually do, I decided to be silent in nature and reflect on my journey. On the west coast, we are lucky to have some of the biggest trees in the world. Trees teach me a lot and being in their presence reminds me to think outside myself. The trees around here have been growing for hundreds of years and keep reaching higher, despite obstacles.  They are a force to be reckoned with – I haven’t even touched on how deep their roots must be.  Check out this beautiful video I found called "Growing is Forever" that I thought would visually encapsulate what I feel when I am surrounded by these tall trees.

Along my path, an awe-inspiring tree stopped me.  This one tree must have stood its ground for a couple hundred years. I find trees fascinating because they start as a tiny seed and over time, look what they turn into! It takes a while for the tree to go from only a trunk, then into branches, and then to bearing leaves. However, it is a process that can’t be rushed and they must withstand the waiting.

I had to stand at the base of the tree and look up; it was so amazing to see what came of a tiny seed. I felt inspired! Thank you, tall tree, for teaching me to be patient and to see the joy in small things.

So often, we want results immediately. However, I have learned over my lifetime that growth takes time. Patience is so important and worthwhile.  Take your time and enjoy the sights.  You are right where you need to be! Enjoy the moment.

“A man watches his pear tree day after day, impatient for the ripening of the fruit. Let him attempt to force the process, and he may spoil both fruit and tree. But let him patiently wait, and the ripe fruit at length falls into his lap.” -- Abraham Lincoln
