What It Means To Persevere

Over the last month, I have been focusing my posts on perseverance.  I think it is such an important quality to possess and is essential to life. I have asked individuals to share their stories on how they overcame obstacles.  One of my loyal readers, Sarah L., wrote the following message on what perseverance means to her.  It is such a strong message, and I'm so thankful she reached out and shared with us. Thanks :)

"What does perseverance really mean? As I sit at my laptop in the late afternoon, the answer to that question seems easy enough. I know, in the simplest of terms, that perseverance means dedication to a task or goal, persistence - the inability to quit. In every case where I’ve persevered, I've only had to do it when something was difficult. I’ve never had to persevere when lying on a sunny beach, or babysitting a cute toddler, or eating chocolate cake with friends. Perseverance is only needed when the normal course of action isn't adequate, when extra determination and persistence are required to get the job done.

Perseverance is one of the most valuable, yet under-rated attributes. There is much talk of talent, beauty, brains, charisma and wit. But what good are they if you quit when the going gets tough? One of the finest British Prime Ministers of all time, Winston Churchill, was known for his inability to quit. I’ve long admired his wit, political acumen, and immense intelligence. But what distinguished him from his peers? They were intelligent and skilled, as well. What made Churchill extraordinary was his incredible courage and perseverance. He bolstered the hope of an entire nation, and was instrumental in the defeat of Nazi Germany. Against immense odds, and with the fate of the world hanging in the balance, Churchill never, ever, ever gave up.

To persevere means to challenge yourself to do better, to work harder, to be more creative, and to use what you have to get the job done well. When you persist, you build character and expand your horizons, emotionally and mentally. Lance Armstrong (a decorated athlete and cancer survivor) says it best, when reflecting on the many challenges he’s faced in life: "Giving up was never an option."

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Therefore, I extend the question Sarah brought up to everyone: "What does it mean to persevere?"

Looking forward to hearing what you have to say!
